Tune in to ‘Flower Power’ in Whittington - Open Gardens Event 8th/9th July

Tune in to ‘Flower Power’ in Whittington - Open Gardens Event 8th/9th July

A feast of flowers and horticultural gems awaits visitors to Whittington’s 2017 Open Gardens event. Two years ago the event attracted well over 700 visitors who were thrilled by the fascinating range of gardens on display for a day. This year by popular demand the event is being run over 2 days on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July from 11am – 4pm each day.

The event is being organised by Whittington & Fisherwick Environment Group (WFEG) and St Giles Church and is being sponsored by locally based company, Fortress Recycling.

There are 15 gardens for visitors to enjoy ranging up to 2 acres in size, plus a fabulous Flower Festival in St Giles Church and a ‘Flower Power’ display of paintings and craftwork by Lichfield Society of Artists on botanical themes. Most gardens are within easy walking distance, but there is also a free minibus to reach the outlying gardens.

Car Parking is available in next to Church Farm, Back Lane, WS14 9NL.

While most are private gardens, the collection also includes St Giles Hospice sensory garden, Woodhouse Farm and Garden, Jubilee Park Community orchard and a lovely ‘guerilla’ garden created by a local resident on a canal bridge.

Organiser Dave Murcott said “We have a fantastic range of gardens in Whittington, of all shapes and sizes. From an exotic woodland garden to wildlife meadows, from raised vegetable beds to fishponds, from a sensory garden to orchards and polytunnels, Whittington really has it all. Visitors can also enjoy the flower-filled troughs on Main Street, recently installed as part of the Village ‘River of Flowers’ project with funding from Tesco’ Bags of Help scheme.”

Programmes cost just £5 per adult (under 16s free). These act as an ‘event passport’ giving entry to all gardens and full details of location etc. These are available from the event hub in St Giles Church Car Park, Church St, Whittington, WS14 9JX.  This is also where people can buy teas, coffees, cold drinks and delicious home-cooked lunches or enjoy a scrumptious cream tea
