Whittington residents cut fuel costs with Smarter Driving
Residents in a local Parish are making big savings on driving costs with help from Whittington and Fisherwick Environment Group and the Energy Saving Trust.
In a joint venture with the Energy Saving Trust, Whittington and Fisherwick Environment Group have enabled a number of local residents to experience one to one advanced ‘smarter’ driving instruction.
The techniques learnt can enable savings of up to 15% on driver’s fuel consumption – a significant cash benefit at today’s prices. Smarter driving also has safety benefits as well as reducing vehicle wear and tear and importantly helping to reduce CO2 emissions
The Energy Savings Trust explained from their considerable experience ‘that one-to-one tuition is by far the most effective way to learn the techniques, even in just one short 50 minute lesson.’
Whittington drivers who took part completed a given circuit twice, once before and once after training. MPG was measured for both circuits so that drivers could see for themselves how much they saved. Each driver was presented with a certificate showing their percentage reduction in fuel consumption and stating how much money this would save over a year.
Colin Carter, a Whittington resident who took part, said
“This was a really interesting and informative event – and fun.
I was amazed by the difference in fuel economy that was achieved with such small differences in driving. We went out to lunch in Solihull on Sunday and my mpg on the drive there and back was 67.6mpg against my normal average of about 48. Thanks to WFEG for organising this.”
The Chairman of WFEG, Mike Kinghan encouraged everyone to pass on what they had learnt stating that “This is the first time we have done this and it’s been a terrific success. We are running this again on Saturday 18th September and will put on more courses if there is demand. There is a small charge of £10 for Whittington and Fisherwick residents and £20 for people living outside the Parish to help cover our costs.’
